Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award
ABA Commission on Women in the Profession Accepting Nominations for 2006 Margaret Brent
Women Lawyers of Achievement Award
|
The 16th Annual Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Awards Luncheon will be held Sunday, August 6, 2006, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession established the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award in 1991 to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women lawyers. This award honors outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence within their area of specialty and have actively paved the way to success for other women lawyers. The award will be presented to five women lawyers who excel in a variety of professional settings and who personify excellence on either the national, regional or local level. Margaret Brent was the first woman lawyer in America. She arrived in the Colonies in 1638 and was involved in 124 court cases over the course of eight years. In 1648, she formally demanded a "vote and voice" in the Maryland Assembly, which the governor denied. Over 250 years later, Harper's magazine noted: "By this action, Margaret Brent undoubtedly placed herself on record as the first woman in America to make a stand for the rights of her sex." Nominations are due on or before December 5, 2005. Awards will be made in March 2006. To nominate someone, complete the nomination form along with other required materials found on the ABA website. http://www.abanet.org/women/awards.html
