The North Carolina Bar Association has awarded a $2,000 endowment grant to the NCCWPS for its Summer Institute.

The North Carolina Bar Association has awarded a $2,000 endowment grant to the North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service and the North Carolina Bar Association Committee on Women in the Profession. The grant will provide a scholarship for a participant in the NCCWPS Summer Institute for the Summer of 2006. According to the NCCWPS, although women represent 51% of the state population, only 22% of our elected officials are women. Representation in rural areas is even lower. While 24% of those running for local office in the Triangle were women, only 16% of those in Chatham County and 4% of those in Johnston County were women. The Center was formed in 2003 to address the need for women-specific recruitment, training, and mentoring to increase the number of women in appointed and elected office in North Carolina. Participants in the Summer Institute will interact with women who have held appointed or elected political office and explore ways to develop opportunities to serve in these positions.
